Week 13: My Favorite Genre

My Favorite Genre: PowerPoint

Week 12: Agent Carter Essay

Agent Carter (2013)

Essay:

The Agent Carter film displayed several Elements of Film. Agent Carter is a Marvel film
franchise that is why in the first sequence we see flashes of other comic characters in the
Marvel Universe. The film utilized several Elements of Film to in the first five minutes, the film
showed various camera shots, angles, editing, sounds and aspects of mise-en-scene.

The first scene where the Marvel flashes we see various comic book images.
We also see non-diegetic sound. Where Peggy was speaking to Steve before Steve goes down.
Then, the director cuts into the scene where both Peggy and Steve are looking at speaking to
each other with and Peggy is seen crying and Steve placing her picture over the the failing system.
The shot where the plane is falling fast showing simultaneity between Peggy and Steve as she believes
Steve dies. Peggy shows obvious solemn emotions as she believes Steve dies. The plane falling and
Steve bracing for the fall creates tension between the scenes. She calls out for Steve as she begins to
cry and the scene is blacked out. The sad music in the background serves as a soundbridge to
the next scene. The next scene cuts into a city sideline a year later. An alarm goes off as the
everyone in the office together puts their briefcases on the desk this is significant because this
shows cuts between the alarm and the people in the office setting. The camera cuts to the
protagonist as the man on the other line of the phone warns about an extremely dangerous threat.
Peggy is asked on how she is holding up by the boss and tells him that she is used to going to the field.
Some might assume Agent Finn is biased against Peggy doing any field work, and the actress who
plays Peggy portrays that that through her acting in the scene. The angles in this part of this scene
shows the high level to show the inequality between Peggy and the rest of her male peers.
The it is scene at a male peer is patronizing Peggy from a lower angle than a middle angle is introduced
when Peggy shows that she had already completed the report. Then, the under the file there is a picture
of Steve Rodgers  (Capt. America). The lighting is high key lighting where the scene is shown to be
significant. To show a reminder to what Peggy true mission in life is. Then, she is snapped out of that
realization when she is told that she will finally be able to go out on the field. Then she is seen in a dark
office alone which is an example of low light, and director is trying to display Peggy’s isolation among her
job. The phone alarm rings as she picks up the phone which is her opportunity. The dark scene, lighting,
and music is showing an impending danger to the mission. Then showing three men who look
sketchy telling Peggy she can’t enter. This scene switches from contrast and simutalently from Peggy
outside working and the guard eating a sandwich. Then, the broken window. Peggy is off the shoot and
the guard is holding a handgun. He opens the door and the camera shot is a close up on the Peggy
hand and gun against his head. With music in the background building suspense. This clip showed the
various ways that the director used various elements of film to convey their message.

Week 10: Mise-en-Scene

Gossip Girl (2007-2012)
Season 4 Episode 8

I watched the TV show Gossip Girl and looked and into consideration several factors of Mise-en-Scene such as setting, lighting,  costume, and staging.

The setting showed the significance because the characters are forced to interact in the big city of New York. However,  Serena and several other characters of the shows that are in the central area of Columbia University. the setting is significant because in Gossip Girl their is a contrast between the lavish Upper East Side where Serena, Blair, Nate, and Chuck in comparatively to Dan and Vanessa who live in a studio apartment in Brooklyn. In this episode, all the characters will attend a ballet to expose Juliet who has a personal vendetta against Serena Van der Woodsen.

Serena at the fountain.

Costumes play a role because they are going to a ballet and all are dress and beautiful formal gowns.

Gowns of Blair, Serena, and Juliet gowns.

Lighting, low light was shown when Vanessa and Juliet are plotting are dark shows the pettiness in the room, where as at the ballet outside by the fountain show was light and vibrant showing the brightness within the scene and the happiness of the characters. The highlight is usual especially since this show is more dramatic than happy.

Vanessa and Juliet plotting.

Performance is the most notable part of this episode from Juliet almost close to redemption when Nate deceives her to believe that he forgave her, the actress ability to make the audience (me) feel bad for her then hate her shows a lot about her performance. Also, Chuck and Blair who provide comic relief by their dysfunctional relationship. My favorite scene when Chuck, Blair, Serena, and Nate exiled Juliet for ruining their lives.

Blair deflecting Juliet attempt to expose Serena to Dean Ruppert.

Week 8/9: Five Master Shots w/ Sounds

Five Master Sounds:

Laura and I added sound which was a very interesting process. We added music to bridge between the scenes we throughout our little clip. Adding this was an example of non-diegetic sound. This is important because it was bringing the sound together. We also added music to contrast between Laura and Mickey drinking water and coffee with rock music and birds chirping. The scene where I am sleeping and read "Witch Dreams" and I am saying my thoughts out loud and falling asleep. With the parallelism the sound reminded me of the scene that this was inspired by the Breakfast Club. The leitmotif is was a fun one with the examples of Hey Jude playing in the background. This is significant because it showed the fun we were having. Lastly, the scene with Laura dog and the classroom showed the voiceover and post synchronization dubbing.

Week 7: The Princess and the Frog

Five Master Shot Movie Review
The Princess and the Frog (2009)
Directed by: John Musker & Ron Clements

This is an example of simultaneity this is shows the nature animal witch dancing as the animals are also dancing outside. This shows her command over nature.

This is an example of contrast where Tiana is explaining to her mom her vision for the restaurant she bought.

This is an example of leitmotif where the antagonist is trapping the naive Prince Navid by inciting him with things such as money and power.

This is an example of parallelism because Louis refers to how he wants to play with the big boy when he is the big boy himself, and the humans where shocked to see a gator playing trumpet.

This is an example of symbolism because Ray the light fly’s light goes out which symbolizes his death and he becomes of of the stars in the sky shining down on the characters which significantly to the name Ray.

Week 5/6: Five Master Shots

Five Master Shots:

I created my Master Shots with Laura. We created several different shots that display various versions each Master Shots.

Our first shot was contrast. We shot Laura drinking water from a bottle, and Mickey drinking coffee. This is is contrasting views because the substances in their cups/bottles, but contrasting shots of two people.

The second shot was of various shots of Laura and I walking throughout the halls of Lely High. This shot of parallelism was inspired by the Breakfast Club where the group of kids are roaming the halls trying not to get caught from their teacher. This was the most fun to film for me and I had a great time running away from Laura.

The third shot is symbolism. This symbolism shot was of me reading a book titled Witch Dreams. Then of me preceding to fall asleep. This displayed symbolism because of the irony of Witch Dreams and falling literally unconscious.

The fourth shot was leitmotif of Laura and I being gymnast. They are happening consecutively.

The fifth show was simultaneity which showed the contrast between the classroom working diligently and about the same time Laura's dog Kota sleeping soundly.

Enjoy!

Week Four: The Breakfast Club

Image result for the breakfast club

A Camera Shot Review of
The Breakfast Club (1985)
Director: John Hughes
Camera Shots

The first shot I noticed from the Breakfast Club was that  Hughes created an Establishing Shot that established the setting of the movie. This shot was followed by the simultaneous introduction of the characters. Hughes uses this shot to signal to the audience that it is significant to the movie's overall plot.

Image result for the breakfast club high school

The next shot I chose was the close up shot of the clock. Since the movie is based on teenagers in detention, the director uses the clock to pace the film. This clock appears several times during the film.

This shot was the over-the-shoulder shot. In this scene, you can feel Bender's feelings of helplessness as  Mr. Vernon berates and belittles Bender. Bender has this rough exterior you see his insecurity and Mr. Vernon vehemently abusing his power. As an audience you feel for Bender. Bender's rough exterior was is broken and he is vulnerable.

These shots are the a series of close up shots. This shot is a shot the Clarke who was the sitting in boredom. In this scene it was a series of shots panning from each character. This one characters of the "Breakfast Club." The second shot is Bender breaking down after Clarke was asking about his family and Clarke questioning Bender about the validity of his abusive home.  The third shot is Bender hiding from Mr. Vernon after he sneaks out from the closet.  The Fourth close up shot is of Brian. This gives the audience a grip on who Brian really is.

These shot are a series of long shots that show the "Breakfast Club" trying not to get caught by Mr. Vernon. These long shot convey a mood of urgency among the audience. Personally, this was my favorite scene among the whole film because the camera pans very fast and shows various shots of each characters.

These next shots are Two Shots that show conversations between  Claire, Clarke, and Bender. You can see the tension in the first shot where Bender is making snide comments towards Claire and Clarke. This makes the audience admire the jerky and nonchalant attitude that Bender had. Also, the second image shows a more mellow conversation with Claire and Clarke who have a more common ground then the diverse characters in the "Breakfast Club."

These are close reaction shots that showed Allison character development towards the end. Basically, Allison reaction to Clarke's reaction of her makeover. The second shot is significant because it is Claire giving Bender her diamond earring to Bender's leather glove which shows the vast differences and common ground of the both Claire and Bender's characters.

Week Three: Angles

I picked Laura and Miranda's camera shots which both did an amazing job.

Laura's shots were all amazingly shot. Laura's extremely long shot was my favorite because she captured the way the sunset hit the water and it was a well developed shot. This shot gave me a feeling of tranquility and the sun rays hit the water beautifully. Laura's Head on Shot was adorable. Her dog gave me a exciting feeling as it felt as the dog was running at me. Although, we filmed several shots together, the ones that we did not film together were very interesting. All together Laura did an exceptional job.

Miranda's establishing shot created a mellow. The shot was extremely well done. This shot lighting was gleaming through the setting. This was my favorite shot from Miranda because it was a hand held shot and this shot make me feel included in the scene. This was due to the shakiness of the camera which was perfect for the establishing shot.

Both Miranda and Laura's shots were both light and fun. Laura's shots differed from the environment and nature to her friends. Where Miranda's shot were fun loving shots. Both of  Miranda's and Laura's camera shots were extremely enjoyable and entertaining.

Week Two Assignment: Video Shots

This is a high angle shot where I stood on the second floor and used my camera to film the subject on the first floor.

This shot is the low angle shot, where I stood in the first floor and filmed this video up to the second floor.

This is a point of view shot taken in the point of view of the subject.

This is the over the shoulder shot. I put the camera on the shoulder of the subject.

This is a two shot used to film the conversation between the two subjects.

This is a head on shot that shows subjects running directly at the camera.

This is a long shot showing the subjects at a distance. Maybe too long of a distance.

This is a pan shot where I had filmed from a slight shaky camera.

This is a follow shot where I am following the subject down the hallway.

This is the freeze frame shot where the subjects were ask to freeze in their positions.

This is a reaction shot where this character was reacting to a situation.

This is a eye level shot from my eye level. I held the phone at eye level.

Creating theses shots were a bit more difficult than I initially expected. Mostly from quality issues. I had the hardest time filming certain aspects such as the eye level shot and the pan shot because they where difficult to keep the camera steady. With the head on shot I almost got knocked over. Overall, I had a good experience filming the various shots.
